CAROLANN’S MEETING WITH SARAH BROWN AT DOWNING STREET

After going through three security gateways, two body searches and an X-Ray type machine to check for sub-machine guns in my handbag, I was finally ushered into the grand and gracious surroundings of Downing Street. It looked truly festive - bedecked with holly with an enormous glittering Christmas tree.

We were then directed to the Breakfast Room where coffee, tea, croissants and cake were served. All in all there were about 40 of us from all over England, from Devon to Newcastle, and I was proud to be the only Support Group representative chosen! Sarah Brown (who is very tall and much prettier in real life!) came round and introduced herself to us and explained that her purpose was to bring the autism community together to celebrate their work. After Sarah’s speech, Phil Hope (Minister for Care Services) spoke about the Government’s commitment to the Autism Act and how the Adult Autism Strategy would have a big impact on statutory and other services. We were then herded into a big hall and seated in groups at various tables to discuss:

1. What is the biggest social change that you would like to see over the next five years that would significantly change the lives of people on the autistic spectrum?

2. In addition to Government and public services, what can the third sector (this means voluntary sector) do locally to move towards this vision?
